The project features a custom 1.0 mm RHEINZINK Titanium Zinc standing seam roof with continuously changing compound curves that gracefully converge toward a raised central ridge. Every roof panel was individually engineered and fabricated, creating a flowing architectural form that appears effortless while demanding exceptional precision.

The Challenge

When CSI Architectural Metal was first invited to bid the project, the owner questioned whether the roof could actually be fabricated.

Unlike a conventional standing seam roof, this design incorporated:

Building From a Digital Twin

The Palmer Drive Residence was constructed under an accelerated schedule that provided very limited opportunity for traditional field measurements before fabrication.

Rather than delaying production, CSI implemented a digital workflow centered around 3D laser scanning . A specialized scanning company captured millions of survey points describing the building’s as-built geometry. CSI’s engineering department converted this point-cloud data into fabrication-ready shop drawings, allowing manufacturing to begin while construction progressed.

Although the digital workflow dramatically accelerated fabrication, Palmer Drive reinforced an important philosophy that continues to guide CSI today:

The more field verification available, the better.

Laser scanning is an extraordinary tool for capturing complex geometry, but final field verification remains invaluable for achieving the highest possible fabrication accuracy.

The shop drawings specifically note that roof panel dimensions were developed from the 3D survey while recommending field verification before installation.

The Signature Porte Cochère

The sweeping entrance porte cochère has become the defining architectural feature of the residence.

Unlike a conventional curved canopy, this structure combines multiple compound radii that change continuously in both plan and elevation. Every roof panel, fascia component, batten, butt plate, and attachment point was individually engineered and fabricated.

Engineering a Roof That Challenges Convention

The Palmer Drive porte cochère intentionally breaks one of the fundamental principles of metal roofing.

Conventional standing seam and batten seam roofs are designed so that seams run parallel to the direction of water flow , allowing rainwater to travel uninterrupted from ridge to eave.

The Palmer Drive design intentionally does the opposite.

The architectural battens sweep across the roof following the compound geometry, placing them perpendicular to the natural direction of water flow .

Under normal construction, every batten would create a dam, trapping water behind it.

Rather than asking the architect to compromise the design, CSI engineered an entirely new roofing solution.

A One-of-a-Kind Concealed Drainage System

The porte cochère functions as a sophisticated rainscreen roof assembly.

Each raised aluminum batten incorporates a continuous series of precision-machined concealed drainage slots.

As rainwater reaches a batten, it enters these engineered openings rather than collecting behind the profile. Water passes through the slots, exits on the concealed backside of the batten, and continues naturally down the roof.

The drainage openings begin on the exposed roof surface before wrapping upward through the batten and discharging behind the profile, making them virtually invisible once installed.

This concealed drainage strategy required thousands of precision-machined slots following continuously changing compound curves.

The fabrication package includes dedicated Slotted Perforation Details documenting this custom drainage system developed specifically for Palmer Drive.

The curved roof panels presented unique fabrication and transportation challenges. Each panel was manufactured to a precise radius and could not be replaced with standard stock material.

To protect these specialized components during shipping, CSI designed and fabricated custom shipping crates engineered specifically for the roof geometry.

The Willowbrook / Rosa Parks Station Improvement Project transformed one of Metro Los Angeles’ busiest transit hubs into a modern multimodal transportation center serving the A and C Lines. The comprehensive renovation included a new Civic Plaza, Metro Customer Service Center, Security Facility, Mobility Hub, expanded platforms, enhanced pedestrian circulation, and significant architectural improvements designed to better connect the station with the surrounding community.

Project Overview

Nestled in the hills of Woodside, California , this exceptional custom residence was built for Bob Bridger , then Vice President of Apple, during the era when Apple was constructing many of its world-renowned retail stores. During that same period, CSI Architectural Metal was invited to participate in several Apple Store projects, making this residence part of an exciting chapter in the company’s history.

The design combines timeless European sheet metal craftsmanship with contemporary residential architecture. While modern in appearance, the roof was constructed using CSI’s custom CSI-LG-DLSS™ Double-Lock Standing Seam Roofing System , one of the most durable and respected architectural roofing systems available.

CSI Scope of Work

CSI Architectural Metal fabricated approximately 12 metric tons of 0.8 mm Rheinzink into a complete architectural roofing package, including:

The French limestone wall cladding and masonry were supplied and installed by others. CSI’s scope focused exclusively on the architectural sheet metal roofing system and rainwater management package.

One of the roof’s signature features is the custom scalloped standing seam termination . Rather than ending each seam with a conventional square cut, every seam was individually shaped and hand-finished to produce an elegant traditional European appearance. Although subtle, this detail requires significantly more layout, fabrication, and installation expertise and reflects the highest level of architectural sheet metal craftsmanship.

A complete Rheinzink half-round rain gutter system complements the roofing package.

Every gutter, hanger, outlet, and downspout was coordinated as one complete architectural system, reflecting the traditions of European sheet metal craftsmanship.

Stone & Metal Integration

One of the defining architectural elements of the residence is the seamless integration between natural stone and architectural zinc.

The limestone was imported from France and custom cut by the masonry contractor to precisely receive the Rheinzink roofing and flashing assemblies. Close coordination between the stone and sheet metal trades ensured crisp architectural transitions while maintaining long-term waterproof performance.

The result is a timeless composition where traditional European masonry is beautifully complemented by precision-crafted architectural metal.

A Personal Milestone

This residence represents one of Daniel T. Schmidt’s final personal installations as a master sheet metal craftsman before transitioning into full-time leadership of CSI Architectural Metal, focusing on engineering, fabrication, product development, and design-assist services.

Daniel personally installed the complete CSI-LG-DLSS™ Double-Lock Standing Seam Roofing System , applying traditional European sheet metal techniques developed over decades of experience.

CSI Architectural Metal was brought into the project during the design-assist phase, where we worked closely with the architect and project team to engineer many of the sheet metal details before fabrication began. Our involvement included developing constructible standing seam details, coping transitions, roof edge conditions, gutters, rake flashings, and installation sequencing to ensure the architectural vision could be successfully executed. The mock-up drawings illustrate many of these engineered details and installation sequences developed for the project.

The architect selected Rheinzink for the roofing system. During the design process, CSI also proposed terne-coated stainless steel as an alternative because of Malibu’s demanding hot, dry marine environment. Based on our experience, terne-coated stainless steel generally offers superior long-term durability in these conditions while maintaining the natural appearance architects often seek.

Ultimately, the design team elected to proceed with zinc, and CSI fully supported that decision by fabricating the custom roofing components and providing installation consulting throughout construction. VNSM performed the installation, delivering a high-quality installation that has stood the test of time.

Approximately 13 years after completion , recent site photographs show the zinc has developed a beautiful natural patina. Aside from localized cosmetic wear in a few exposed areas that can be addressed through routine maintenance, the roofing system continues to perform well. The building’s location and setback from the Pacific Ocean appear to have contributed to the roof’s successful long-term performance.

This project highlights CSI Architectural Metal’s collaborative approach—providing engineering expertise, constructability reviews, fabrication, and installation support while respecting the architect’s material selection and design intent. The result is a high-quality architectural metal roof that continues to perform successfully more than a decade after installation.

CSI Architectural Metal was selected to fabricate approximately 33 metric tons of Rheinzink Pre-Patina Graphite-Gray into the CSI-LG-Angled Seam Wall Panel System, producing the building’s distinctive vertical metal façade. The custom-fabricated panels complement the brick architecture while providing crisp shadow lines, exceptional weather resistance, and a clean, contemporary appearance.

The Pterodactyl appears almost effortless in its sculptural expression, yet it is composed of hundreds of individually fabricated zinc panels wrapping a constantly changing geometry.

Unlike conventional buildings with repetitive façades, nearly every wall, roof plane, parapet, and folded surface changes angle, direction, or elevation. Every transition required careful engineering and close coordination between architect, structural engineer, fabricator, and installer.

Metal Construction News recognized CSI Architectural Metal’s contribution immediately at the beginning of its feature on the project, noting that CSI Architectural Metal fabricated more than 19,000 square feet of RHEINZINK® prePATINA Blue-Grey Flat Lock Tiles for the façade, along with approximately 3,600 square feet of Flat Lock Tiles for the building’s low-slope roof system. CSI Architectural Metal fabricated the specified RHEINZINK system exactly as designed, faithfully executing the architect’s vision through precision engineering and manufacturing.

Since completing The Pterodactyl, CSI Architectural Metal has significantly expanded its material technologies and finishing capabilities.

If this project were being designed today, CSI would also present the architect with an additional material option: Type 316 stainless steel finished with CSI’s proprietary 316SS-Zinc™ architectural finishes.

Developed after The Pterodactyl was completed, the 316SS-Zinc™ replicates the appearance of natural pre-weathered zinc while utilizing the superior strength and corrosion resistance of marine-grade Type 316 stainless steel.

The Pterodactyl occupies an elevated site within the Los Angeles basin where marine air from the Pacific Ocean combines with urban pollutants. This mixture of airborne chlorides and atmospheric contaminants creates an aggressive environment for exposed architectural metals. Based on CSI’s experience with exterior building envelopes, Type 316 stainless steel offers exceptional long-term durability under these conditions while preserving the aesthetic qualities architects appreciate in natural zinc.

The Eisenberg Residence is a custom luxury residence designed by internationally acclaimed designer Wallace E. Cunningham in one of Southern California’s most prestigious coastal neighborhoods. Situated on approximately 2.31 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the residence was approved as a custom two-story estate featuring over 11,400 square feet of designed space, including a pool and spa. The project required Coastal Development, Site Development, and Neighborhood Use permits due to its sensitive site and architectural complexity.

Although the residence has remained largely private and has never received the widespread publication of some of Cunningham’s other iconic works, it exemplifies his signature approach to sculptural geometry, precise detailing, and seamless integration of architecture with the surrounding landscape.

Unlike conventional composite panel systems, the CSI-WAP™ system utilizes welded aluminum plate construction, allowing for exceptional structural rigidity, crisp architectural detailing, concealed fastening, and fully customized fabrication. Every panel, fascia, soffit, and trim component was individually engineered to meet the architect’s vision while maintaining the precision required for one of Beverly Hills’ most exclusive residential neighborhoods.

One of the defining features of the residence is the sweeping curved fascia surrounding the outdoor living pavilion. Rather than approximating the geometry with segmented components, CSI fabricated continuous curved aluminum plate assemblies that maintain perfectly aligned shadow reveals and uninterrupted architectural lines around the entire structure. Achieving this level of precision required custom engineering, radius fabrication, welded construction, and extensive quality control to ensure every panel aligned flawlessly with adjacent stone, glazing, and structural elements. CSI'S Contribution

CSI Architectural Metal was selected to fabricate the home’s custom exterior metal cladding.

Rather than utilizing conventional repetitive metal panels, the façade was engineered as a completely custom interlocking system. Nearly every panel was individually fabricated to its precise location, allowing the exterior to emulate the appearance of hand-laid ashlar stone while maintaining the precision and clean lines of modern architectural metal.

The fabrication drawings document numerous custom panel widths and lengths, illustrating the bespoke nature of the system.

Material Innovation

Architectural Bronze Without the Drawbacks

One of the defining elements of the residence is its custom façade fabricated from marine-grade Type 316 stainless steel finished with an advanced PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) titanium coating.

This material was chosen because it combines the visual warmth of architectural bronze with the durability required for a luxury residence located directly on the Atlantic Ocean.

When first installed, the façade exhibited a bright metallic bronze appearance. As natural daylight interacted with the finish, it developed the rich, medium-dark bronze character visible in the completed residence.

Unlike traditional bronze, the PVD-coated stainless steel:

Will not develop green oxidation.
Resists salt-air corrosion.
Maintains excellent UV color stability.
Prevents runoff staining.
Requires minimal long-term maintenance.

This made it an ideal solution for one of Florida’s most demanding coastal environments.

OCEANFRONT ENGINEERING

Situated on approximately 2.36 acres stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway, the residence comprises approximately 8,818 square feet of living space across four levels with five bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, two powder rooms, a six-car garage, elevator, private dock, and resort-style outdoor living areas.

The exterior cladding system had to withstand:

Hurricane-force wind exposure
Salt spray
High humidity
Intense UV radiation
Continuous thermal movement

The use of marine-grade 316 stainless steel and a concealed interlocking attachment system provided both long-term durability and the crisp architectural aesthetic envisioned by JAG.

Project Overview

Situated at the end of prestigious Sierra Mar Drive in the Hollywood Hills, this residence represents Belzberg Architects’ philosophy of blending sculpture, engineering, and architecture into one cohesive design. The home features dramatic cantilevered forms, expansive glazing, panoramic city views, and a restrained material palette that allows every architectural detail to become part of the overall composition. The approximately 4,700-square-foot residence includes five bedrooms, six bathrooms, multiple outdoor living areas, and a striking zero-edge pool that visually extends toward the Los Angeles skyline.

Belzberg Architects envisioned the residence as a sculptural architectural composition where every line, joint, and material transition contributes to the overall design. To realize that vision, CSI Architectural Metal fabricated a custom façade from 1.5 mm aluminum with a proprietary architectural finish. Because the building’s geometry continually shifts, nearly every panel was individually manufactured and engineered to maintain precise alignment and crisp reveals. Installed by Metal Tech Sheet Metal under the direction of master craftsman Todd Clark, the completed façade demonstrates how advanced fabrication and traditional sheet metal craftsmanship can transform complex architectural concepts into reality.

Panel Development & Design Collaboration

Before finalizing the façade system, CSI Architectural Metal worked closely with the design team to develop and evaluate multiple panel joint configurations that would best express the architect’s vision. As illustrated in the project photographs, several full-scale concepts were fabricated and reviewed to study shadow lines, joint depth, panel proportions, and the overall visual rhythm of the building.

One concept explored a Interlocking Reveal panel system, in which adjacent panel edges wrapped around one another to create a subtle interlocking profile reminiscent of traditional brick coursing. This approach emphasized depth and texture while producing a distinctive pattern of light and shadow across the façade.

A second concept featured CSI Architectural Metal’s proprietary Flat Lock Tile system, a precision-engineered panel assembly that has become one of the company’s signature architectural systems. Frequently specified for landmark residential, institutional, and commercial projects across the United States, the Flat Lock Tile system offers exceptionally clean lines, precise alignment, concealed fastening, and outstanding flexibility for complex architectural geometry.

Following an extensive design evaluation, the project team selected CSI’s Flat Lock Tile system. Its refined appearance and ability to accommodate the residence’s sophisticated geometry most faithfully captured Belzberg Architects’ design intent while delivering the precision, durability, and craftsmanship required for a project of this caliber.

CSI Architectural Metal’s Contribution

CSI Architectural Metal fabricated the complete custom architectural aluminum panel system using 1.5 mm aluminum finished with a proprietary architectural coating developed specifically for the project.

Although the finished appearance appears simple and refined, nearly every panel required unique fabrication due to the constantly changing geometry of the building.
