METAL TYPES: MUNTZ METAL
Warm Character. Enduring Performance.
A Distinctive Architectural Alloy
Muntz Metal is a copper-zinc alloy composed of approximately 60% copper and 40% zinc, with small traces of iron. Part of the brass family, it combines the warmth of polished brass with the rich, evolving character of aged bronze.
Originally developed in the 19th century for marine sheathing and shipbuilding, Muntz Metal has become a distinctive architectural material for façades, roofing, and decorative metalwork where natural patina and long-term durability are desired.
Approximately 60% copper / 40% zinc
Warm golden-brown appearance
Naturally evolving patina
Excellent corrosion resistance
Suitable for roofing, façades and architectural details

A Living Finish That Evolves With Time

Muntz begins as a bright, golden-yellow surface similar to polished brass. As it naturally oxidizes, the material develops deeper bronze and dark brown tones, sometimes revealing subtle black or olive undertones depending on exposure.
In marine or high-humidity environments, the patina can stabilize into a rich, dark caramel-brown finish, adding both protection and architectural depth.
Muntz Metal Develops a Rich, Naturally Protective Finish Over Time
Muntz Metal begins with a bright golden-yellow appearance and gradually develops deeper, warmer tones as it is exposed to the environment. Unlike pure copper, Muntz does not typically develop a green patina. Instead, its oxidation progresses toward rich bronze and dark brown tones.

Corrosion Resistance & Longevity
Muntz Metal performs exceptionally well in marine and humid climates. Its dense oxide layer provides lasting protection against atmospheric corrosion while allowing the material to age naturally.
Unlike pure copper, Muntz does not develop the familiar green patina. Instead, its stable brown oxidation layer creates a durable, naturally aged appearance with minimal maintenance when properly detailed.
Expected Service Life: 80–100+ Years

Made for Architectural Craftsmanship
The balance of copper and zinc gives Muntz Metal excellent malleability and strength. It can be rolled, formed, welded, or soldered using traditional sheet-metal techniques, making it well suited for detailed architectural fabrication.
