METAL TYPES: ZINC & ZINC ALTERNATIVES

Timeless Aesthetics. Engineered Performance.

At CSI Architectural Metal LLC, we specialize in supplying architectural metal systems that combine enduring beauty with proven durability. Zinc has long been celebrated for its ability to develop a natural, self-healing patina — but not every project or climate is suited for natural zinc alone. That’s why CSI offers a comprehensive portfolio:

Designing for the desert requires in-depth understanding of the extreme temperatures that range here.

From freezing temperatures in the winter to blistering hot ones in the summer, the region contains every extreme, and the homes that are built in it must also. Rains and wind, endless sunshine, these are all elements that we considered when designing for this region.

In addition to using modern strategies, we referred to ancient design concepts embraced by native people for generations, combining the two to create modern homes in this timeless, desert environment.

This patina is dense, insoluble, and self-healing — extending zinc’s service life to 50–100+ years.

Zinc forms its own protection when exposed to the elements:

Pre-Oxidized Finishes

CSI offers natural zinc in a range of factory-applied pre-oxidized finishes, from light gray to deep black. These products allow architects to achieve a desired look from day one.

Important Note: These finishes are not static. Over time, exposure to the environment will cause the surface to continue its natural transformation, developing a patina that modifies the original factory-applied finish. This process gives every project a unique character while maintaining the long-term protection zinc is known for.

Environmental Performance

  • Inland / Rainy Climates: Ideal. Frequent rainfall promotes a uniform, stable patina.
  • Marine Climates: Still effective with proper detailing, thicker panels (0.8 mm+), or pre-weathered alloys.
  • Dry & Hot Marine Climates: Not recommended — lack of rain prevents stable patina formation.

 Design Requirement

  • Minimum slope 3:12 (≈14°) for roofing.
  • Perfect for façades, rainscreens, and pitched roof designs.

Custom PVDF-Coated Stainless Steel 316

When projects demand zinc aesthetics in low-slope or harsh marine zones, CSI offers PVDF-coated Stainless Steel 316.

    Advantages:

  • Suitable for flat & low-slope roofs where zinc cannot perform.
  • Marine warranty for durability in coastal projects.
  • Stable finish — no patchiness, no runoff staining, no uneven weathering.
  • Aesthetic range:
  • Pre-weathered zinc look
  • Aged zinc patina look

   The Result

The look of zinc with the strength of stainless, engineered for the harshest conditions.

Terne-Coated Stainless Steel

For projects requiring a natural gray patina with maximum corrosion resistance, CSI supplies Terne-Coated Stainless Steel on Alloy 444.

Why Alloy 444?

  • Superior resistance to chlorides (salt air) and industrial pollutants.
  • Stable in marine, low-slope, and industrial environments.
  • Longer service life than standard substrates.

Natural Gray Finish

  • Lead-free tin/zinc terne coating develops a subtle, matte gray patina.
  • Provides the authentic look of weathered zinc or lead with stainless steel strength.

Where It Excels

  • Marine and coastal projects
  • Low-slope roofs and cladding
  • Harsh industrial atmospheres
