Luxury Coastal Residence
Nestled within the prestigious Maniniʻōwali neighborhood of Kukio Golf & Beach Club on the Kona Coast of Hawaiʻi Island, Hale ʻIlio is a custom luxury residence designed to complement its volcanic surroundings while embracing the relaxed indoor-outdoor lifestyle that defines contemporary Hawaiian architecture.
The home features a low-profile pavilion design with deep roof overhangs, natural stone, warm wood accents, and expansive glazing. The roof was envisioned as one of the home’s defining architectural elements, providing both visual elegance and long-term durability in one of the world’s most demanding coastal environments.
Precision European Craftsmanship
CSI Architectural Metal fabricated and supplied the custom flat lock roofing system utilizing premium RHEINZINK prePATINA blue-grey titanium zinc. Every panel was precision manufactured to create the clean, uninterrupted geometry envisioned by Walker Warner Architects.
The roof consists of individually fabricated flat lock tiles installed in a carefully coordinated diagonal pattern that emphasizes the building’s low horizontal proportions while creating subtle movement across the roof surfaces.
Particular attention was given to:
- Precision panel sizing and consistency
- Accurate alignment of diagonal joint patterns
- Clean hip and ridge transitions
- Minimal visible roof penetrations
- Long uninterrupted roof planes
- Tight fabrication tolerances for premium installation quality
Architectural Performance
Unlike painted roofing materials, titanium zinc naturally develops a protective patina that continuously renews itself over time. The pre-weathered blue-grey finish complements Hawaiʻi’s lava fields, limestone walls, tropical hardwoods, and surrounding landscape while requiring minimal maintenance.
The material offers:
- Naturally weathering architectural finish
- Exceptional corrosion resistance
- Excellent marine-environment performance
- Long service life
- Sustainable, recyclable construction material
- Timeless European architectural appearance
Design Highlights
The completed residence demonstrates the architectural philosophy for which Walker Warner Architects has become internationally recognized throughout Hawaiʻi and California:
- Low-profile pavilion architecture
- Deep cantilevered roof overhangs
- Strong indoor-outdoor connection
- Natural materials palette
- Clean modern detailing
- Integration with the surrounding volcanic landscape
The flat lock roof serves as a unifying architectural element across the home’s multiple interconnected roof forms, contributing to the refined character of the residence without overpowering the architecture.
